Description
The “promiscuity” gene is a genetic variant of the DRD4 gene, which provides instructions for the dopamine receptor D4. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter (chemical found in the brain) that gives us feelings of reward and pleasure. Binding between dopamine and its receptor are key to transmitting the signals that result in these feelings.
Individuals who inherit the “promiscuity” variant (aka the 7R+ variant) of the gene produce a dopamine receptor that binds dopamine less effectively. As a result, these individuals need higher levels of dopamine to achieve those feelings of reward and pleasure. It is possible that the risk-taking, novelty-seeking behaviors are utilized by these individuals to achieve the required higher dopamine levels.
The ”promiscuity” gene
The “promiscuity” gene variant occurs in a repeat region near the DRD4 gene. The number of repeats in this region can range from 2 to 11, all of which are detected in this test. These variants are designated 2R, 3R, 4R, 5R, …. and 11R.
We each inherit two copies of the DRD4 gene, one from each parent. As such, it is possible to inherit two identical copies of the gene or two different copies of the gene. Individuals inheriting at least one copy of the 7R+ variants (7R, 8R, 9R, 10R or 11R) are twice as likely to be promiscuous compared to those individuals how inherit repeat lengths of less than 7 (2R to 6R).
Uncover what your DRD4 genotype is with this DNA test. This test is not intended to predict promiscuity with certainty, as many other factors besides genetics likely play a role in promiscuity.
