Description
The “warrior” gene is a genetic variant of the MAOA gene with a link to aggressive and impulsive behavoir. The MAOA gene produces the enzyme monoamine oxidase A, responsible for breaking down neurotransmitters in the brain. Individuals with the “warrior” gene produce lower levels of monoamine oxidase A, which leads to an accumulation of neurotransmitters in the brain. Studies have linked “warrior” gene to an increased chance of displaying aggressive and antisocial behavior. Another study has linked the “warrior” gene to making successful business decision. This DNA test detects the presence of the warrior gene.
Genetics behind the “warrior” gene
This DNA test detects the presence of repeats near the MAOA gene, which influences how much MAOA proteins is produced. Five variants are identified in this test: 2R, 3R, 3.5R, 4R and 5R (numbers refer to the number of repeats).
- Individuals with 2R, 3R and/or 5R have the “warrior” gene and make less MAOA protein
- Individuals with 3.5R and/or 4R make normal levels of MAOA protein
The MAOA gene is found on the X-chromosome, which means that men inherit only one copy of the MAOA gene while women inherit two copies. As a result, men are more likely to be affected by the “warrior” gene. A woman will need to inherit two copies of the “warrior” gene to be affected.
